At YWCA Lewiston – Clarkston, we are committed to raising awareness and fostering change around the critical issues that impact our community. Each year, we honor three important months dedicated to bringing attention to the issues of stalking, sexual assault, and domestic violence and work to educate the public, support survivors, and advocate for change in our community.

Congress officially declared January as National Stalking Awareness Month in 2004, aiming to increase awareness of the devastating impact stalking has on its victims. Throughout the month, YWCA Lewiston – Clarkston shares information and resources to shed light on this issue and offer support to those affected.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is honored every April. In 2001, the efforts of many different groups coalesced with the establishment of the first Sexual Assault Awareness Month, as a response to the growing need for awareness and prevention of sexual violence. During SAAM, we aim to educate the public about sexual violence, promote prevention efforts, and provide support to survivors.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), observed every October, evolved from the “Day of Unity” in October 1981. The goal of the event was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence. The first official DVAM was observed in 1987, and in 1989 Congress formally declared October to be National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. YWCA Lewiston – Clarkston promotes campaigns to raise awareness in the community, distributes resources to educate and inform, and honors victims of domestic violence in various ways throughout the month of October.

By observing these months, YWCA Lewiston – Clarkston continues its mission to support survivors, advocate for change, and educate our community about these issues. Together, we can work to make a better community.
